In the past month, significant power outages have disrupted operations at Nottingham City Council, Heathrow Airport and parts of Kent, highlighting the critical importance of (UPS) systems and uninterrupted power to maintain essential services. In this blog, we highlight what happened, what went wrong, and how these instances could have been avoided with properly maintained and deployed UPS systems.

Heathrow Airport’s Unprecedented Shutdown

On March 21, 2025, a fire at the North Hyde electrical substation in Hayes, approximately 1.5 miles north of Heathrow Airport, caused a major power outage. This incident led to the cancellation of over 1,300 flights, affecting around 300,000 passengers worldwide. The airport remained closed for nearly 24 hours as emergency teams worked to restore power. Despite the availability of alternative substations, the time required to safely switch power sources contributed to the prolonged disruption.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, focusing on the resilience of the airport’s power supplies. There were also reports that the financial markets experienced a significant dip following the closure, with global stocks dropping sharply. Heathrow’s status as one of the world’s busiest airports, handling over 80 million passengers annually and serving as a key hub for international trade, meant that its shutdown had a ripple effect on global commerce. Airlines, travel companies, and associated industries saw major losses.

This catastrophic oversight underscores the critical importance of regular, robust UPS maintenance in safeguarding not just an airport’s operations but the entire global infrastructure. A failure in such a high-stakes environment illustrates that the cost of neglecting power resilience can have far-reaching consequences, both in terms of economic disruption and public confidence.

Nottingham City Council’s Operational Disruptions Due to Power Cut

On March 13, 2025, Nottingham City Council’s headquarters, Loxley House, experienced a power outage that severely impacted its IT data centre. This led to widespread disruptions across various council services, affecting both staff and citizens.

Appointments scheduled at Loxley House, including those with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), had to be rearranged, and access to core systems and phone lines was compromised. The council acknowledged the issue and worked diligently to restore services, but the incident underscored vulnerabilities in its infrastructure, and potential need for more regular maintenance on it’s power backups.

Kent Power Outage Hits Homes and Businesses

On March 21, 2025, more than 1,000 homes and businesses in Maidstone, Kent, were left without power following a network failure. The outage, which affected major areas disrupted daily life for residents and businesses alike. UK Power Networks quickly worked to restore electricity, but the incident once again underscored the unpredictability of power failures and the urgent need for backup solutions.

Power Outage at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert, Scotland Disrupts Healthcare

During Storm Eowyn, which was the UK’s most powerful windstorm in over a decade, Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert, Scotland suffered a 70-minute power outage. The backup generators failed to activate, leaving critical systems at risk. Computers for monitoring medications went down, phone lines were disrupted, and ventilators relied on short-life batteries. Whistleblowers described the situation as “horrendous” and warned that patients were at risk during the power failure.

NHS Forth Valley attributed the incident to a power surge that tripped the electricity supply. While they confirmed that no patients were harmed, they acknowledged the incident as a major infrastructure failure. Hospital leaders emphasised that maintenance on the generators was up to date, but a review was underway to prevent future occurrences.

The blackout sparked concerns about energy security in hospitals, especially after a similar chaos at Heathrow Airport. NHS officials, including Matthew Taylor from the NHS Confederation, called for hospitals across the UK to reassess their systems in light of these failures.

The Critical Role of UPS Systems

These recent power failures serve as a stark reminder of why Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems are essential:

  • Immediate Backup Power – A UPS prevents sudden shutdowns by seamlessly supplying temporary power during an outage.
  • Protects Critical Infrastructure, Data & Services – IT systems, airports, and councils rely on continuous power to maintain essential services.
  • Prevents Financial Losses – Businesses, especially in retail and aviation, suffer significant revenue loss during outages.

For those businesses that rely on power for business continuity – including councils, airports, and businesses – investing in a robust UPS system is not a luxury, it’s a necessity to ensure uninterrupted operations.
