UPS Systems

UPS systems are beneficial for a wide range of industries that depend on reliable power for their operations, including:

  • Data Centres & IT Infrastructure – Ensuring continuous operation and data protection.
  • Healthcare Providers – Maintaining power for medical services and devices.
  • Businesses & Offices – Protecting essential digital tools during outages.
  • Emergency Services – Supporting critical operational systems are powered at all times.
  • Financial Services – Preventing transaction disruptions.
  • Educational Institutions – Keeping online and administrative systems running.

BCL Power can help businesses in all sectors find the right UPS solution for your needs.

There are three primary types of UPS systems:

  • Standby (Offline) UPS: Provides basic protection and is ideal for small, non-critical applications.
  • Line-Interactive UPS: Offers enhanced protection by regulating voltage fluctuations.
  • Online (Double-Conversion) UPS: Delivers the highest level of protection by continuously converting incoming power to direct current and then back to alternating current, ensuring a consistent power supply.

BCL Power can help you determine which UPS type best suits your specific requirements.

While both UPS systems and generators provide backup power, they serve different purposes:

  • UPS: Offers immediate, short-term power during outages and conditions power to protect against surges and fluctuations.
  • Generator: Provides long-term power during extended outages but typically requires time to start up and does not condition power.

Integrating both can offer comprehensive power protection, with the UPS bridging the gap until the generator is operational.

Choosing the Right UPS

This depends on your equipment and infrastructure needs:

  • A small office UPS may only need a few minutes to allow safe shutdown.
  • A larger system may need extended runtime to keep critical systems online or allow generators to activate.

BCL Power can assist in determining the ideal runtime during the design phase of your UPS solution.

It depends on your setup:

  • Rack-mounted UPS – Space-efficient but may take up valuable rack space when additional battery packs are needed.
  • Floor-standing UPS – Ideal when space in the rack is limited, allowing more flexibility.

Proper ventilation and airflow should be considered when choosing a floor-standing UPS to prevent overheating. BCL Power’s experts can help determine the best UPS configuration for your setup.

UPS Maintenance and Servicing

To ensure reliability, UPS systems need regular checks. Basic inspections should be done monthly, including battery status, load monitoring, and ventilation checks. However, professional maintenance is required every six months to comply with SFG20 guidelines. This must be done by a specialist UPS engineer, not a general electrician, to avoid costly failures and ensure accurate diagnostics. BCL Power offers expert UPS maintenance and servicing to keep your system running smoothly.

A poorly maintained UPS may fail when needed most, leading to:

  • Data Loss – Corrupt or lost files.
  • Equipment Damage – Power surges can harm sensitive devices.
  • Downtime – Business interruptions leading to financial losses.
  • Security Risks – Power failure may compromise security systems.

Regular maintenance ensures your UPS functions effectively in an emergency. BCL Power provides maintenance plans to keep your system operational.

While general electricians are skilled in handling various electrical installations and repairs, UPS systems are complex devices that require specialised knowledge for proper maintenance and troubleshooting. UPS specialists possess in-depth understanding of these systems, including battery management, load balancing, and firmware updates. Engaging a UPS specialist ensures that your system receives the precise care it needs, extending its lifespan and enhancing reliability. BCL Power offers expert UPS maintenance services tailored to maintain optimal performance of your equipment.

UPS batteries typically last 3-5 years, but their lifespan depends on usage, temperature, and battery type. Regular monitoring and timely replacement help maintain optimal performance. BCL Power can help assess your battery health and recommend replacements when needed.

While some UPS systems have user-replaceable batteries, incorrect installation can lead to malfunction or safety risks like overheating. Professional assistance ensures safe and correct installation while also checking for any underlying issues. BCL Power provides battery replacement services to ensure proper installation and system integrity.

A well-maintained UPS can last 8-10 years. Routine servicing and timely battery replacements play a key role in maximising lifespan. If your UPS is nearing the 8-year mark, a professional assessment is recommended. BCL Power offers UPS health checks to evaluate your system’s condition.

Technical UPS Definitions

Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) is a feature in UPS systems that adjusts the incoming AC voltage to stabilise the output power to connected equipment. This ensures that devices receive consistent voltage levels, protecting them from damage caused by voltage fluctuations.

VA (Volt-Amps) and Watts both measure power, but they represent different aspects:

  • VA: Measures apparent power, which is the product of the voltage and current supplied to the equipment.
  • Watts: Measures real power, which is the actual power consumed by the equipment.

The ratio between Watts and VA is known as the power factor. Understanding this distinction is crucial for selecting a UPS with adequate capacity. BCL Power can assist in calculating your power needs to ensure optimal UPS performance.
